Olivier Biondi obtained a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Evry (France, 2000-2004) followed by a Master in cellular biology at the Paris Descartes university (2004-2005). In 2008, he earned a doctorate in cellular neurobiology in 2008 from the Paris Descartes University at the Center for the Study of Sensorimotricity (UMR 8194 of the CNRS). His work focused on the effects of physical exercise in mouse models of infantile spinal muscular atrophy, a degenerative motor neuron disease. He then completed a postdoctoral research in the Neuromuscular System and Inflation team (INSERM U955) at the Department of Anatomy and Pathology at Mondor Hospital in Créteil (France) on muscular adaptations in a limb girdle muscular dystrophy, dysfernilopathies (2008-2011). He was then appointed associate-professor in cell biology at the Paris Descartes university in 2011. He is active in research and teaching at the Faculty of Fundamental and Biomedical Sciences in the university Saints-Pères center.

His line of research focuses on describing the pathophysiological mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases specifically affecting motor neuron (Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) using physical exercise as a tool for soliciting motor units. He was able to show that not only physical exercise could be beneficial in these two pathologies but also that these benefits passed through cell-specific neuroprotection and dependent on the type of activity. Thus, when practicing physical exercises with different intensities, only the subpopulation of activated-neurons (fast motor unit after high intensity exercise vs slow motor unit after low intensity exercise) is protected. This work allowed the setting up of a national clinical trial in spinal muscular atrophy (PHRC ExerASI, N° ID RCB 2013-A01331-44), of which Olivier Biondi is the scientific officer. This study aims to assess the impact of active physiotherapy in this disease and to develop novel noninvasive tools for the analysis of the motor function of patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
